The Black Death on the Silk Road
In the shadow of the Black Death, the Silk Road became both a conduit of devastation and a catalyst for transformation. Between 1346 and 1350, the plague spread from Central Asia into Europe, carried by merchants, caravans, and ships along ancient trade routes. These same routes - established as early as 1277 - once fueled the exchange of silk and ideas between China, the Middle East, and Europe.
