September 1961, Betty and Barney Hill drive home through New Hampshire, lose two hours they cannot account for, and America gets its first real abduction story. The genius of it is that the Hills did not want the spotlight, they wanted to sleep, and I have enormous respect for a witness who gains nothing and asks for less. The star map Betty drew under hypnosis is the detail that keeps me up at night, in the best possible way. This is the one that started the whole genre, and it still holds.

On the evening of September 19th in 1961, a married couple driving through rural New Hampshire allegedly encounter something from the sky that changes their lives forever. The couple experienced an altered state of consciousness and discover that they had driven 35 more miles but have no memory of this. Their story of possible alien abduction gains widespread notoriety and under hypnosis, both husband and wife are able to give significant details about the event.
